At least nine people have been killed in a fire at a shopping center in Pakistan’s largest city, Karachi. Forty people were evacuated from the multi-storey building and taken to hospitals.
According to information, the fire broke out at 6:30 am local time on Saturday morning. After more than four hours, the fire brigade was able to extinguish the fire.
The cause of the fire is still unclear
The number of deaths could still rise, Arshad Hussain from the city’s higher district administration told the German Press Agency (dpa).
According to him, the charred and not yet cooled building is currently being searched to rescue people still trapped.
Fires are recurring in commercial and residential buildings in the South Asian country as most high-rise buildings lack certified fire and safety systems. At the same time, the country’s fire departments are understaffed and poorly equipped.
