Black series in Upper Austria: Three serious accidents occurred at level crossings within just 24 hours. In Micheldorf a collision ended tragically, in Burgkirchen a driver was seriously injured and only in Aurolzmünster did the train-car collision go smoothly.
The most serious of these happened on Friday around 11:50 am at a level crossing in Micheldorf. This is secured with a signaling system and half barriers. A Ukrainian (43), who has been living with his family in the Kremstal municipality for several years, came to a stop in his car between the lowered barriers. The driver applied emergency braking.
During the collision, the wine-red Skoda Fabia was hit and dragged about 100 meters. Neighbors rescued the motionless driver, who was unresponsive, and began CPR. The emergency physician declared death at 12:16 p.m.
Local leaders had still issued warning signals
The driver stated that he had given another warning signal and that the stationary Skoda jerked forward as if the engine had stopped. The crisis intervention team took care of the train staff, approximately fifty passengers and the relatives of the deceased.
The traffic lights were already “red”.
The series started on Thursday at 2.15 pm in St. Georgen an der Mattig (municipality of Burgkirchen). A man from Braunau (48) crossed the railway crossing without stopping and at a constant pace, where the traffic lights were already “red”. He had apparently overlooked a regional train coming from the right carrying eighteen passengers. Despite an emergency stop by the driver (44), the collision occurred. The car was thrown against the red light system and there was a martenl. The car was just a pile of scrap metal. The man from Braunau was seriously injured, but he was still responsive. The 48-year-old was taken to hospital.
Three hours later there was another crash
Three hours later, an accident also occurred at a level crossing in Altenried in the municipality of Aurolzmünster: a Hungarian (20) crossed the unblocked level crossing in a van, ignored the stop sign and looked over a regional train coming from the right. The driver (35) blew a whistle and applied emergency braking. Yet a collision occurred. The Hungarian, the 24 passengers and the driver were unharmed.
