The mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, proudly lit the large Christmas tree in St. Mark’s Square on Friday evening.
“We light the Christmas tree in the most beautiful place in the world. All we ask is respect for the city and its works of art. Everyone who loves Venice is a Venetian,” the mayor told his audience, his chest swelling with pride.
The 15 meter high and seven meter wide pine tree is decorated with white lights and gold-colored balls. St. Mark’s Square was also covered in Christmas lights, the ‘light path’ stretched from the Rialto Bridge to Piazzale Roma.
Venice will test charging entrance fees for day tourists next spring. On particularly busy days and weekends, tourists must pay an entrance fee of five euros between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., Brugnaro said.
The entrance fee will be charged on a total of 29 days in 2024: from April 25 to 30, from May 1 to 5 and all other weekends (Saturday and Sunday) until July 13 and 14.
