Photographer Jason Moore took first place in the competition with his photo of a kangaroo that appears to be playing an air guitar. The photo titled ‘Air Guitar Roo’ was taken in August 2021 in a suburb of the Australian city of Perth.
Humanization makes animal photos funny
Jury member Paul Joynson-Hicks, initiator of the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards in 2015, said in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung that only one element is needed to make an animal photo appear funny: humanization – that animals “look like people. ” ‘Seem to behave the way humans do.’
Other category winners: Vittorio Ricci won the Creatures of the Air Award for his barred heron entitled ‘Unexpected Plunge’. Otter Kwek won the underwater category with his charming otter.
Timea Ambrus won the Portfolio Award with a collection of four images of ground squirrels.
The “Video Award” went to Lily Bernau for her brilliant film about a penguin called “Too Cold”. Young photographer Jacek Stankiewicz won the Junior Award with his image of greenfinches entitled “Dispute” and also triumphed at the Affinity Photo People’s Choice Award.
