Difficult conditions – Rax became a snow hell for father and son

Date:

Under breathtakingly unfavorable conditions, the 55-year-old Viennese and his son (22) decided to reach clear heights from the Höllental via the Rudolfsteig. And all this with increasingly intense snowfall and icy cold.

Originally, the duo wanted to reach the wash bar house via the plateau. But even the ascent became an unmanageable challenge due to snow conditions and bad weather.

No telephone contact was established
The duo’s next alpinist mistake: the planned descent on the difficult Gaisloch trail! Given the hopelessness, the men made an emergency call around 4 p.m. However, their rescue was complicated by a number of circumstances: for example, after the alarm had been raised, telephone contact could no longer be made with the missing persons. In addition, the darkness and snowfall did not allow the use of a helicopter or a drone to pinpoint the precise location. In addition, the Rax cable car is currently out of use for maintenance.

Icy rocky path
Several teams from the local Reichenau office and an Alpine police officer therefore had to set out on foot, trudging through meters of snow masses. Fortunately, the helpers’ suspicions that those whose lives were in danger had found shelter in a nearby but abandoned hut were confirmed. Despite the pitch blackness, the abseiling through the icy rock path was ultimately successful.
