According to FBI statistics, the United States recorded 61 outbreaks last year, a 52 percent increase in violent crime committed by so-called “active gunmen” compared to 2020. The number of incidents has increased significantly compared to 2020 and is the highest in 20 years.
Last year’s shootings killed 103 people and injured 140, according to the FBI report. 2021 was the seventh deadliest year since registration began in 2000, but it saw the most attacks of this type.
The deadliest incident of 2021 was the mass shooting at a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado, which killed 10 people. Eight people were killed and seven injured at a FedEx branch in Indianapolis.
The US agency defines an active gunman as someone who apparently indiscriminately kills or intends to kill people in public places. The FBI noted that the data does not exclude acts of gang or drug-related violence, incidents defined as domestic violence, isolated hostage-taking or crossfire from other criminal activity.
Last massacre only on May 20 in Buffalo
The latest killing in the US took place on May 20 in Buffalo, New York (see video above). Ten people were shot dead by a teenager for racist reasons and three others were injured.
