The unions propose non-traumatic measures to prevent layoffs at Michelin Vitoria

Date:

The company announced last Friday that it plans to lay off 150 employees from its plant in Vitoria-Gasteiz, and another 26 from Lasarte, in Gipuzkoa. Similarly, another 650 employees could see their working hours reduced.

The unions proposed this Monday to the management of Michelin Vitoria “non-traumatic” measures so that the 150 redundant staff calculated by the company do not translate into layoffs.

The management of the multinational’s Alava factory, the largest in the state with approx 3500 employeesmet this Monday with the works committee to explain the situation created by the poor production forecasts for next year, the lowest in the past twenty.

For this reason, the company announced last Friday that it will lay off 150 employees at its plant in Vitoria-Gasteiz (more another 26 from Lasarte), that the work calendars of another 650 employees who would see their working hours reduced will be adjusted, crippling an investment of 75 million euros over the next three years.

Sources of CCOOthe majority union at the factory, explained that they jointly submitted a proposal during Monday’s meeting UGT promoting the age of access to aid contracts and early retirement, functional mobility between factory workshops and voluntary geographical mobility between factories in Spain and Portugal whose production has not been affected by the drop in demand.

Likewise, they have shown their willingness to support “any other non-traumatic measure.” In this sense, other unions have considered analyzing the possibility of redundancies.

CCOO and UGT have been advised that in order to negotiate the approval of the substantial change in the working conditions of all people affected by the company’s plans, it will be an inalienable ‘premise’ that for the remainder of this year and from 2024 there is not a single layoff in the factory for the productive causes brought forward by the company.

The management of Michelin Vitoria has collected the proposals from the social side and will analyze them before holding a new meeting next Friday, the sources consulted said.
