Airspace violated – Polish army confirms: missile came from Russia

Date:

The flying object that violated Polish airspace on Friday morning was a missile from Russia, as the military has now confirmed. The missile was detected by radar and immediately left Polish airspace towards Ukraine.

“Everything indicates that a Russian missile has entered Polish airspace,” Polish Chief of General Staff Wieslaw Kukula told journalists.

Heaviest air raids in a long time
Russia carried out the heaviest air strikes on Ukraine in a long time on Friday. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, 158 missiles and combat drones were deployed against the country. Among the targets attacked was the western city of Lviv, which is about 70 kilometers from the Polish border. Ukraine has been defending a Russian invasion for more than 22 months.

Poland’s chief of staff said they had tracked the trajectory of most Russian missiles during the night. One of them then flew over the Ukrainian border with Poland. “We have ordered our aircraft to intercept them and shoot them down if necessary.” But this was not possible due to the short time and the way the rocket flew. To be on the safe side, soldiers still searched for debris on the ground along the flight path.

Two killed on impact in November
In November 2022, a rocket hit a Polish village on the border with Ukraine, killing two civilians. The West believes it was a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile used to defend against Russian attacks.

Poland is a member of the US-led NATO defense alliance. Within the alliance there is an obligation to provide assistance if a member is attacked. During the war in Ukraine, the US issued an urgent warning against an attack on a NATO member state. “There is no doubt about it: the United States’ commitment to our NATO alliance and Article Five is rock-solid. Every NATO member knows it, and Russia knows it too: an attack on one member is an attack on all. “It is a sacred oath to defend every inch of NATO territory,” US President Joe Biden said in February, referring to this duty of assistance.
