Massive disruptions during a fire operation in Steyregg in Upper Austria continue to worry authorities and spark debate across the country. It’s now clear: 15 residents of the facility will be relocated, and one of the people who caused the fuss has already been identified: a 16-year-old with mental health issues.
The fire brigade around Steyregg has been called 15 times since September to a refugee camp housing 120 underage male teenagers. During two operations, four female firefighters (they are between 16 and 25 years old) were harassed by residents and had to be protected.
15 boys are transferred
And now there are the first consequences: 15 residents are being relocated as quickly as possible. Thirteen have already been taken to Carinthia, two are currently going to Vienna. The federal agency BBU – which manages the district – will also increase the number of informal caregivers.
Although the police said there was ‘no threat’, the firefighters had had enough and made the matter public, making headlines across Austria.
16 year old pressed the alarm button
The boy suspected of having activated the numerous false alarms by pressing the alarm button has now been identified and reported. It concerns a 16-year-old boy who has psychological problems. According to the BBU, the ‘asylum decision-making authority’ has also been informed – this means that the incident is also relevant to the asylum procedure.
Crisis summit announced
Meanwhile, Mayor Gerhard Hintringer announced a crisis summit for January 11. A solution must be found together with the emergency services, the BBU and politicians. The police have announced that they will patrol more often in front of the house and that a patrol car will drive by more often.
By the way, the night of December 29 was the first night in several days that the firefighters in Steyregg were able to sleep through the night.
