In France, a 71-year-old leader of an international yoga association was arrested on charges of sexual abuse. Forty people suspected of being responsible for the cult-like movement are in police custody. 26 women were freed from the hands of their tormentors.
The women were housed in very cramped and unsanitary conditions. They were mentally manipulated into accepting sex with the guru or participating in pornographic chats.
Various reports, investigations since July
Several women of different nationalities who had managed to escape had reported the guru. The French Public Prosecution Service began an investigation last July.
30 women released
This accuses those arrested of, among other things, kidnapping into an organized gang, which is punishable by up to 30 years in prison. The suspects were arrested in the Paris region and in the Alpes-Maritimes department in southern France.
The International Yoga Association had already banned the Atman (formerly Misa) movement in 2008 due to illegal trade practices.
