The onset of winter with snow and ice on roads and sidewalks has hit traffic in many parts of Germany and left at least two people dead. A 71-year-old died in a head-on collision near Schwäbisch Hall on Monday evening. A driver (54) was killed in an icy accident in Rhineland-Palatinate.
Numerous flights at Frankfurt Airport were cancelled. On Monday, 161 takeoffs and landings out of a total of 1,031 planned connections were canceled.
Public transport in Berlin affected
Snowfall and freezing temperatures also caused road users in Berlin/Brandenburg to skid. The snow caused delays and train cancellations on a number of rail routes, for example on the Berlin S-Bahn and on the route between Hannover, Hildesheim and Göttingen. There were also train cancellations and halted bus services in the Taunus region of Hesse.
Accidents occurred in many parts of Hesse, resulting in injuries and property damage. Trees fell under the weight of the snow. In the Rheingau-Taunus district, numerous drivers were stuck in their vehicles. About 100 people had to be rescued from their cars near Eltville due to falling trees.
The students had to spend the night at school
In Wiesbaden, 55 people, including 27 children, had to spend the night in a school because the school buses were no longer running. At times, thirty students and teachers were stuck in a school community in Bad Schwalbach. They were treated, but were taken home by the fire brigade late on Monday evening. Due to the onset of winter, numerous streets around Wiesbaden had to be completely closed.
