The major Austria-wide participation campaign for counting wild birds, carried out by Fressnapf and the Nature Conservation Association, will start on December 1. Whether in the garden, on the balcony, from the window or in the park – every bird counts! In this way, large and small amateur researchers make a valuable contribution to the protection of our feathered guests. In addition, great prizes will be raffled among all participants.
Bird populations in Europe have declined by a quarter over the past forty years. This is the result of an ongoing study. Birds that prefer arable land as habitat are particularly affected, with a population reduction of about 57 percent. But the number of birds in residential areas has also decreased by almost 28 percent. The main reasons for the decline are intensive agriculture, soil sealing and global warming.
Major participation campaign in December
In order to take targeted protection measures for our feathered guests, we need extensive information about the current distribution of individual bird species. The Nature Conservation Association and Fressnapf are therefore jointly calling for a major bird watching campaign in December.
Help us get an overview of Austria’s birds
The “Wild Birds at the Feeding Ground” project from December 1 to 24 offers a good opportunity to get to know the diversity of the local bird world and perhaps discover something new. Whether in the garden, on the balcony, from the window or in the park: every bird watching counts. And: you do not need to have any special prior knowledge or be an ornithologist to participate in this important event.
Observations are shared via an online platform or via the free naturObservation.at app, so reports can be entered quickly and easily even on the go.
The initiative is supported by the Fressnapf company. Bird feeders, feeding columns, feeding bowl vouchers and bird identification posters will be raffled among all participants who report their bird sightings between December 1 and 24, 2023.
