The malaise for Seefeld as a result of the 2019 Nordic World Ski Championships continues: after a damning audit report and the resignation of the mayor, the city council decided to dissolve itself on Tuesday evening. So there will be new elections in March 2024!
The plateau community has had two mayors in a very short time; Werner Frießer resigned in 2021 and his successor Markus Wackerle in October 2023. The reason is the same for both: the financial fiasco of the Nordic World Ski Championships.
Franklening and subsidiaries
A current report from the National Audit Office shows how big the financial gap really is. The actually financially strong municipality carries a debt bag of 9 million euros, but what is probably more serious is the fact that it has outsourced a total of 61 million (!) euros to subsidiaries, for which it itself is liable. for €36 million. The numerous World Cup renovations and new buildings in the ski jumping area were really worth the money and were billed at €31 million.
A loan, which has become increasingly expensive since 2007 due to the increase in the value of the franc, further limits the municipality’s ability to act. These are all reasons why no new candidate for mayor has been found so far.
“Not even the slightest desire to clarify”
“The ÖVP gang of four terrorist groups Frießer, Platter, Geisler and Tratter have ensured that Seefeld has sunk into a debt swamp,” List-Fritz club chairman Markus Sint said yesterday. It cannot be that after Matrei/Osttirol and GemNova the taxpayer has to intervene again. “We hear across the country how tired people are of this kind of politics. The fact that there is not even the slightest desire to clarify shows how serious the state government is,” said Green Party leader Gebi Mair.
In the evening the city council was dissolved and an administrator took over until the elections!
