In Russia, a man was sentenced to ten days in prison for writing ‘No to war’ in the snow of Moscow. According to a court document, the man was discovered by police writing the banned slogan with his fingers in the snow outside an ice rink in Moscow’s Gorky Park.
The police therefore wanted to take the man to the Ministry of the Interior, but he refused. The officers warned the man that he was breaking the law before ultimately arresting him.
“Administrative detention”
The man denied in court that he had resisted arrest, the court document said. However, he admitted to writing the slogan and was sentenced to ten days of “administrative detention”. He was also sentenced to an undisclosed fine, according to a media report.
Russia declared illegal criticism of its offensive in Ukraine shortly after the conflict began in February 2022. Moscow has taken unprecedented measures against dissent since the conflict, which human rights groups have likened to Soviet-era mass repression. Thousands of people have been arrested for simple protests.
