New York Rockefeller Christmas tree illuminated

Date:

The Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center in Manhattan can’t compete with the White House in Washington DC, which shines with 142,425 lights and is decorated with 22,100 bells and 33,892 baubles during Advent – but thousands of New Yorkers didn’t miss the illuminations this year.

New York ushered in the hot phase of the Christmas season by lighting around 50,000 lights on the world-famous Christmas tree.

During the ceremonial ceremony, the lights of the 24-meter-high and 13-meter-wide Norway spruce were turned on for the first time this season on Wednesday evening (local time), to the cheers of thousands of visitors.

This year’s tree is about 80 to 85 years old, weighs twelve tons and comes from a small town in upstate New York. The fir was delivered a week ago (see video above).

The lighting of the lights of the lavishly decorated tree has been celebrated annually since the early 1930s. The event is one of New York’s most popular Christmas traditions, comparable to ice skating at the nearby ice skating rink.

Rockefeller Center, surrounding the elegant 5th Avenue, is one of the must-stops on any Christmas visit to the metropolis of eight million inhabitants on the American east coast. The tree will not be removed again until the new year.
