When Marco Goecke, ballet director of the Hannover State Opera (Lower Saxony), smeared dog poop on a journalist’s face in February, it caused a stir, and not just in Germany. The procedure against a monetary requirement “in the mid-four figures” has now been stopped.
Smearing a journalist with dog feces was considered a physical insult, a spokeswoman for the Hanover Public Prosecution Service said on Thursday. Goecke had to pay an average four-figure sum to a non-profit organization that deals with conflict resolution.
Woman attacked in the foyer
On February 11, 2023, Goecke smeared dog feces on an author of the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” in the foyer of the opera in the capital of the state of Lower Saxony (see video above).
‘Bad, personal criticism’ as a reason to panic
He had previously accused her of always writing “bad, personal” reviews. The Hannover State Theater separated from the choreographer the week after the attack.
According to the artistic director, his contract as ballet director has been terminated by mutual agreement with immediate effect.
