Bombs, ammunition, grenades – everything that causes death is manufactured in the province of Sardinia on behalf of the German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall. Locals call the controversial production site ‘the factory of bloody bombs’. Krone+ explains the background.
The atmosphere is dystopian, like something out of a dark science fiction film. Huge concrete bunkers dominate the scene, spread over 80 hectares of land. High fences with barbed wire everywhere. Photography is strictly prohibited. On the southeastern edge of Sardinia is the small village of Dosmusnovas: 5,900 inhabitants, unemployment is 17 percent and even more than 60 percent among young people. The patron saint is Saint Ignazio da Lacoini, a Capuchin monk from the 18th century.
But there is no sign of silence, prayer and peace. Here, deep in the Italian countryside, workers make the bombs and ammunition for the wars in Ukraine and Gaza. A morally questionable but thriving company. Locals call the production facility of Düsseldorf Rheinmetall AG the ‘factory of bloody bombs’ with a mixture of disgust and admiration.
