Winter has arrived in town. The record snowfall didn’t just bring joy. The emergency services had a lot to do.
Saturday morning the time had finally come: winter arrived at night and the entire city was bathed in winter white.
But what made children’s eyes shine meant a lot of work for the emergency services. Clearing and gritting vehicles had to be deployed everywhere. A total of 280 vehicles and 1,400 employees of the MA 48 winter service were in action. In Ottakring, winter weather conditions caused a car accident. Several vehicles collided with each other. Many Viennese cannot remember that much snow.
“There has not been so much snow since the snowy winter of 2013,” a UBIMET spokesperson told “Krone”. That was ten years ago. Record amount of snow in the city center. But not only the suburbs and higher parts of the city were covered with a thick layer of snow. It also snowed five to ten centimeters in the city.
Expected minus ten degrees
In the Vienna Forest there were even 20! Around 3 p.m. the snowflakes slowly diminished. It continued to snow lightly until the evening hours. During the night the snowfall finally stopped completely. Winter is here to stay. It is expected to be bitterly cold on Monday night. It will probably cool down to around minus 10 degrees. It could be the coldest night in more than five years.
The city’s cleanup vehicles were also on the ring. The first children were already sledding. The Grinzing vineyards were white.
