Various proceedings are underway against former American President Donald Trump; on Friday he suffered two defeats. The judge in charge of his federal case related to attempted election fraud in Washington has denied Trump’s request to dismiss the lawsuit. The Republican justified this with the immunity of the presidency. Trump’s immunity argument also failed in another case in Washington.
There, an appeals court ruled that civil lawsuits against the 77-year-old over the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021 can continue. Trump supporters stormed the Houses of Parliament in Washington.
Five dead in storming of Capitol
Congress met there to formally confirm Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election. Trump had previously incited his supporters during a speech. Five people were killed as a result of the riots.
Trump failed with the presidential immunity argument
Some members of the Capitol Police and Democratic members of Congress subsequently demanded damages. Trump had demanded the dismissal of the lawsuits and had also argued for the immunity of the presidency. The court has now rejected this request, but has not ruled on the admissibility of the lawsuits.
“Today we will not definitively resolve this question”
“The issue of immunity hinges on whether President Trump delivered the January 6 speech in an official or private capacity,” the ruling states. “Today we will not finally clarify this question.” So the last word may not have been spoken here.
Trump lawyer calls possible proceedings ‘election interference’
Meanwhile, Trump’s lawyers defended the former US president for the first time during a hearing on charges of election interference in the state of Georgia. Trump himself was not present at the meeting in Atlanta on Friday. Trump’s lawyer Steve Sadow called a possible lawsuit during next year’s campaign “election interference” and called for the charges to be dropped. The prosecutor’s office has dismissed the charges.
Trump wants to return to the White House
Trump wants to move back to the White House after the elections next year. The hearing discussed, among other things, the date for the start of the actual trial.
In Georgia, Trump was indicted along with 18 other defendants for his efforts to overturn the outcome of the 2020 presidential election in the state. Some of Trump’s former associates struck a deal with prosecutors in the trial and pleaded guilty.
