Can the globally targeted phase-out of fossil fuels be achieved without nuclear energy? Opinions differ on this – also at the World Climate Summit in Dubai. An alliance of twenty countries has been formed there that calls for a more intensive expansion of nuclear energy.
The US, France, Britain and host country the United Arab Emirates are among those involved in the joint statement published on Saturday. The aim is to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, the report said.
Russia and China are not among the signatories
The group of states (see tweet above) demanded that the installed capacity of nuclear power plants worldwide be tripled by 2050 – compared to 2020 levels. The statement was distributed by US climate representative John Kerry. The signatories also include Belgium, Finland, Japan, Poland, Sweden and Ukraine, but not Russia and China, which also have a large number of nuclear power stations.
Kerry referred to scientific statements that climate neutrality by 2050 is “not achievable” without nuclear energy. The statement also calls on international financial institutions to promote the expansion of nuclear energy. This is currently partially excluded in their statutes. Critics point to the risks associated with nuclear power, unresolved disposal issues and high costs.
Expansion of renewable energy sources in the foreground
The COP28 climate conference actually focuses on expanding renewable energy sources. On Friday, a majority of more than 110 countries backed the goal, also backed by Germany, to triple their output by 2030 while doubling energy efficiency by then. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pointed this out in Dubai:
While there is widespread support for the expansion of renewable energy sources in Dubai, views on the move away from fossil fuels this entails differ, as do nuclear energy.
