A group of cycling professionals from Wels were involved in a serious accident: they were driving their car at a red light on the way to the camp in Croatia when it was rammed by a van traveling at around 100 km/h. The Welsers were injured, some seriously, and the driver was drunk.
They were able to cope with the snow chaos on the Austrian roads without any problems on Saturday evening on the way to the training camp in Croatia. Before a group of professional cyclists from the Felbermayr Simplon Wels team from Croatia were involved in a serious car accident just six kilometers from the finish in Zadar. A car carrying catfish professionals was at a red light when it was rammed by a van. Eyewitnesses say the van was traveling at about 60mph when it crashed. Three professional cyclists from Messestadt had to be transported to hospital with serious injuries, suffering varying degrees of injuries, including fractures to the vertebrae and ribs and concussions.

“We are completely shocked and hope that the injuries ultimately do not turn out to be too serious. This is a heavy blow to our team,” says RSW director Daniel Repitz. While the truck driver’s alcohol test was well above two per mille, only two professional cyclists were able to leave the hospital yesterday, the day after the serious accident. The third athlete was still in intensive care last night; thank God his life is not in danger.
Psychological help thanks to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
The Felbermayr Simplon team made contact with the Austrian Foreign Ministry in Croatia, which also organized psychological help for the shell-shocked members of the team, which had grown to 16 drivers this year. Although the shock is deep among the residents of the fair city, despite the horror accident the team wants to tackle the ten-day training camp necessary to prepare for the start of the season in January.
