By Houthi rebels? – US reports attack on warship in the Red Sea

Date:

Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have again attacked ships in the Red Sea. They attacked two Israeli ships in the Bab al-Mandab Strait with a missile and a drone, a Houthi military spokesman told Jam Sunday. These are the ships “Unity Explorer” and “Number 9”. The US Department of Defense said there were indications that a US Navy destroyer was also the target of the attack.

There was initially no confirmation of this. “We are aware of reports of attacks on the USS Carney and merchant ships in the Red Sea,” the Pentagon said Sunday in response to a request. Further information will be provided as it becomes available.

Warnings for merchant ships
A British naval organization that issues warnings to merchant ships around the world also said it had received a report of a drone attack near the Bab al-Mandab strait between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, not far from the coast of Yemen .

Israeli companies in focus
The Houthi rebels had previously threatened to attack “all ships” linked to Israel. All ships flying the Israeli flag, owned by Israeli companies or operated by Israeli companies are a target, Sari said. He repeated the threat on Sunday. The alleged Israeli connection of the recently attacked ships could not initially be independently verified.

One of the world’s most important shipping routes runs along the Yemeni coast to and from the Suez Canal in Egypt. This canal connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea and provides the shortest sea route from Asia to Europe. About ten percent of all world trade passes through the Red Sea.

Several incidents in the Red Sea
Several incidents have occurred in the Red Sea in recent weeks. The American destroyer ‘USS Carney’ shot down several cruise missiles and drones that, according to the US, were launched by Houthi rebels in Yemen. In mid-November, the rebels also hijacked a cargo ship partly owned by a British-Israeli businessman.

The Houthis took over large parts of Yemen in 2014 and now control large areas in the north, including the capital Sanaa.
