Away from the front – on your own mine steps: Russian general dead

Date:

In the Kherson region in southern Ukraine, which is occupied by Moscow, aggressor Russia is currently suffering heavy losses. Several senior soldiers and police officers are said to have been killed.

Brigadier General Vladimir Zavadsky “died in a combat post in the special operations area,” the governor of the Voronezh region, Alexander Gusev, said on Telegram’s online service on Monday.

The investigative news portal iStories reported that Zawadski was the seventh major general whose death Russia has confirmed. Overall, he is the twelfth senior officer confirmed dead since the start of the war in February 2022. According to Gusev, Zawadsky was a highly decorated officer and former tank commander. His death is a terrible loss.

General stepped on mine
According to information from Russian Telegram channels linked to the military, Zawadsky was killed in late November. The general had therefore stepped on a mine outside the front area, indicating that it could be an object previously placed by the Russian forces.

Ukrainian media had earlier reported, with reservations and citing a Ukrainian military official, that the army general had been killed on Tuesday. According to media reports, Sawadski most recently served as deputy commander of the 14th Army Corps. His face was used by Russian military propaganda for recruitment purposes.

Disastrous attack on the village of Yuvileyne
Russian state media reported on Wednesday that at least four police officers and 18 occupied officers were injured in an attack on the village of Yuvileyne the day before.

The Ukrainian army and independent Russian Telegram channels confirmed the attack on the meeting of occupation officials in the village about 40 miles southeast of Kherson. There was talk of five dead police officers in Kiev.

The Russian military says Ukraine has killed six of its own generals since the war of aggression began in February 2022. Ukraine believes Russia has lost about a dozen generals since the invasion. The information cannot be independently verified.

Russia says it is making progress in Donetsk
Meanwhile, Russia reported military advances in the disputed eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk. The forces managed to capture Artyomovskoe. The town, known to Ukrainians as Khromove, is on the western edge of Bakhmut, which Russian soldiers took control of in the summer after months of fighting.

Increasing use of banned cluster bombs
According to British information, the Russian air force in Ukraine has recently increased the use of Soviet-type RBK-500 cluster bombs. Britain’s Ministry of Defense cited reports on Wednesday that the explosives had been used against Ukrainian forces near Vuhledar and Avdiivka in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region. A precision-guided glide system is likely to have been integrated so that the fighter plane can drop the bombs far from the target, it was said in London.

“Russian glide bombs generally have low accuracy,” the ministry said. “However, due to the large number of submunitions, a single RBK-500 can have an impact over an area of hundreds of meters, increasing the likelihood of causing at least some damage to the intended target.”

In its war of aggression against Ukraine, Russia has repeatedly used internationally banned cluster munitions from fighter planes. Ukraine had the US supply this type of artillery ammunition to achieve greater success in its counter-offensive to liberate its Russian-occupied territories.
