There is sadness and consternation in China right now. A tourist died there after bungee jumping from one of the highest platforms in the world.
The stately 338-meter-high television tower “Macau Tower” in China attracts countless tourists with an unusual appeal. At the so-called bungee station, brave people can dare to jump from 233 meters. It is one of the highest bungee jumps in existence. Accidents are considered rare in extreme sports.
However, early on Sunday afternoon (local time), a 56-year-old man died after the jump, writes the British newspaper ‘Daily Mail’. Shortly after his voluntary fall into the depths, he suffered from shortness of breath and subsequently collapsed.
The emergency services were immediately informed. According to the information, the paramedics could no longer detect a heartbeat. The man was eventually pronounced dead at the hospital.
Operator: Report previous illnesses
The company that operates the bungee platform, AJ Hackett, emphasizes on its website that information about any previous illnesses and other health risks must be communicated in advance. These include heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes and previous surgeries. If there are no worries, adventurous people could dare to dive into the depths for an amount of about 325 euros.
The company also says it has successfully completed more than four million jumps worldwide. The tower also performs well on the Tripadvisor platform, giving it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Bungee jumping has been possible at the tower in Macau since 2007. During the 20-second fall, speeds of up to 75 kilometers per hour can be reached.
