On Monday, doctors and nurses marched through the center of Vienna as part of a protest march. They called for reforms and salary adjustments.
Shortly before 3 p.m., several hundred doctors and hospital workers in the federal capital took to the Neuer Markt with self-designed signs as part of a protest march organized by the Vienna Medical Association.
The route first led along the Albertina to the Ring, from there the procession marched along the Ring past the Vienna City Hall to Schottengasse and finally via Freyung and Graben to Stock im Eisen Platz, where the last rally would take place at 4 p.m.
“More appreciation”
The doctors demanded “more appreciation”, “more time for training” or warned about the “closing of departments” and what they saw as excessive bureaucracy (“The patient is dead by the time the computer is started”). Peter Hacker (SPÖ), Vienna City Councilor for Public Health, was often the addressee: “We know where there is a problem”, “Our healthcare system has a problem”.
30 percent more salary required
The Medical Association is not impressed by the fact that salary agreements have now been made and that the city has announced higher bonuses in the community hospitals. The measures do not go far enough for her. In addition to a 30 percent increase in salary, structural reforms are needed, such as 30 percent more staff, 30 percent more time for patients and 30 percent less bureaucracy.
