Fighting PKK – Three Dead Soldiers After Military Action in Iraq

Date:

In mid-April, the Turkish army attacked the Kurdistan Workers’ Party PKK in Syria and northern Iraq. Now three Turkish soldiers have been killed and four others injured. But it probably won’t stay that way, as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced a possible further deployment.

Three soldiers have been killed in fighting against the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in northern Iraq, Turkey’s defense ministry said on Tuesday. Four other soldiers were injured. To date, there is no information about casualties on the other side. Shelters, tunnels and ammunition depots were bombed, among other things. Thousands of local residents have already fled.

New mission planned
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke Monday about a possible new mission in northern Syria. There, the army mainly acts against the Kurdish militia YPG and already controls border areas. The government classifies both the YPG and the PKK as terrorist organizations. The PKK is also classified as such in the US and Europe. Sweden and Finland are said to support the two associations, which is why the Turkish government is currently blocking the start of the NATO admission process.

The conflict between the PKK and the Republic of Turkey has been going on since 1984 and has killed tens of thousands of people.
