The breakdown services were constantly deployed throughout Upper Austria on Monday to help: frozen doors, broken batteries and frozen diesel were major problems. Meanwhile, snow shovels sold particularly well at the beginning of this week.
The snow and cold made for warm days for the ÖAMTC emergency workers along the road. “We are in constant use, all vehicles are in use, there will be about 60 of them,” says chief technician Dieter Lepschy. On Monday at 3 p.m. they ‘celebrated’ the thousandth mission. Frozen diesel, faulty batteries and icy doors were the biggest problems drivers faced.
Lepschy therefore recommends longer journeys to charge the battery and silicone spray for the door seals. But the icy start of winter also had ‘winners’. Winter boots and snow shovels sold extremely well. “Since Friday there has been a huge demand for snow shovels and gravel. On Monday morning alone we had already sold 70 snow shovels by 10am. We have a good stock, but are currently in the process of reordering,” says Thomas Reckendorfer from the Pasching warehouse.
Min 25 Deg
After the snow came the frost (as announced). Temperatures dropped significantly across Upper Austria on Monday night. In the Mühlviertel, minus temperatures of up to 25 degrees were even measured. But: it will be considerably warmer for the rest of the week.
Deep in the north of the Mühlviertel, more specifically in Liebenau-Gugu – a weather station that is located in a depression and traditionally delivers very low temperatures – minus 25 degrees was measured. In Freistadt it was only slightly “warmer”, where the thermometer showed minus 19 degrees.
This is how it continues
According to GeoSphere Austria, Reichersberg was the coldest place in the Innviertel at minus 18 degrees and even in Linz it was freezing at minus 11 degrees. If you don’t want to be so cold and shivery, you should go to the mountains. At Feuerkogel it was only minus 0.6 degrees with full sun at 9 a.m., and during Monday even comfortable plus degrees – two to be precise – were measured.
“The weather is now getting a bit warmer and precipitation should fall again in the coming days. It even rained in the Innviertel,” says meteorologist Claudia Riedl from GeoSphere Austria.
