A few weeks after Elon Musk announced he would also make his satellite broadband service available to protesting Iranians, the first Starlink receivers have apparently appeared in the land of the mullahs. According to media reports, the goods are being smuggled out of Iraq.
The receiving devices are said to be traded on the black market for the equivalent of almost 2000 euros. The receivers cost a multiple of the original price, as reported by the online portal “Tejaratnews”.
After the recent nationwide protests broke out, authorities have also severely restricted the internet in the country. The reason was the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. The vice squad arrested her for not complying with the mandatory rules for wearing a headscarf. The woman died on September 16 in police custody. Since her death, thousands across the country have demonstrated against the government’s repressive course and Islamic rule system.
Important help also for the Ukrainian army
Tech billionaire Elon Musk announced a few weeks ago that he would apply for a special license in the US to provide the Starlink satellite network in Iran despite US sanctions. The system establishes high-speed internet connections directly via its own satellites. It is being built by Musk’s space company SpaceX. Communication via Starlink also plays an important role in Ukraine’s defense of the country against the Russian invasion.
