In January 2012, the cruise ship “Costa Concordia” hit a rock off the Italian Mediterranean island of Giglio and capsized. 32 of the more than 4,200 people on board died. The then captain of the luxury ship, Francesco Schettino, has been serving a 16-year prison sentence in Rome since 2017. Now he can at least get out of prison during the day. He will be doing community service outside the prison walls.
The new assignment for Schettino, who has been doing charity work internally in the Roman prison for years, comes from the prison management: he must digitize files from processes that are in the state archives.
The 61-year-old has reached the deadline to access alternative measures to detention.

On January 13, 2012, Captain Francesco Schettino steered the cruise ship with 4,229 people on board — 3,216 passengers and 1,013 crew — against a rock off Giglio Island. The hull was cut open, the ship went into a strong bank and came to rest on a rocky base. 32 people died in one of the worst cruise ship disasters. There were also 77 Austrians on board, all of whom were able to survive. Schettino was sentenced to 16 years in prison, which he is serving in Rome’s Rebibbia prison.

Ten years after the accident, relatives of those who died at sea commemorated their loved ones: they prayed, sirens sounded, a wreath of flowers was handed over to the sea. “The Costa Concordia disaster is proof that tragic mistakes can happen, but that it is possible to fix ourselves, correct mistakes and that when the right synergies are created, extraordinary things can be achieved,” said Gabrielli, who then head of the Civil Defense Department. He referred to the successful towing and demolition of the “Costa Concordia”, which left no trace of the island of Giglio.
