Chennai International Airport, India’s third busiest airport after Mumbai and Delhi, was flooded on Monday. The reason for this was heavy rain caused by cyclone “Michaung”. It has been raining non-stop for days in the megacity of Chennai.
Footage (see video above) shows that the runways at Chennai International Airport were flooded with several centimeters of water, causing disruptions to air traffic. The airport had to be temporarily closed and numerous flights and landings were cancelled.
Interruptions also in local transport
Several parts of the city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu were flooded and even washed away cars as Cyclone Michaung moved along the coast towards neighboring Andhra Pradesh state. The massive rainfall led to disruptions in local transport, internet and electricity supplies in the region.
iPhone production was also interrupted
Due to the cyclone, iPhone production at the factories of Apple partners Foxconn and Pegatron in Chennai also had to be halted on Monday, Reuters news agency reports. And this especially during the important Christmas matters.
Foxconn, which employs about 35,000 people at its iPhone factory in Tamil Nadu, has yet to decide whether it will resume production on Tuesday, the company said.
