Environmental alert on today’s World Soil Day: Land erosion in Austria is even worse than feared, according to new calculations. What these calculations look like and how politicians want to counter them in the future
The closed area is – according to careful research by the Austrian Spatial Planning Conference, which is above all suspicion of activism – 547 square kilometers larger than we were previously told by official bodies. To illustrate the terrifying dimensions, this roughly corresponds to the area of Vorarlberg and Vienna combined. The greenery, which will probably forever be covered with asphalt and concrete, extends not over 2,417, but over 2,964 square kilometers in Austria. No less than a calculation error of 20 (!) percent!
