According to local media reports, Israeli police have authorized a march by far-right demonstrators through Jerusalem’s Old City. The participants demand, among other things, complete Jewish control in the city and on the Temple Mount. To do this, they mainly march through the Muslim neighborhood.
The planned route for Thursday evening is shown in a brochure. If the path actually passes through the Muslim quarter, it would be an extreme provocation for many Palestinians. Police have not commented on the permit.
According to the leaflet, the participants also want to expel the Jordanian Waqf Authority from the Temple Mount. It manages the Temple Mount, which, together with the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, is the third holiest site in Islam. But it is also sacred to Jews because there used to be two Jewish temples there. They are allowed to visit the facility, but are not allowed to pray there. Israel is responsible for the security of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.
Under Israel’s control since the 1967 war
The Israeli army captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem during the Six-Day War in 1967. However, the Palestinians claim the areas for their own state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
