The Spanish police, together with customs, have managed to strike a major blow against international drug smuggling. Officials discovered a massive 7.2 tonnes of cocaine in a container containing frozen fish from South America in Galicia.
This was reported on Wednesday by Spain’s largest radio station, Cadena SER, as well as by the newspapers “Faro de Vigo” and “Voz de Galicia”, citing research circles. Four suspects have been arrested, it is said.
This was the largest quantity of cocaine in a long time that could be intercepted in the autonomous community of Galicia, located in the northwest of Spain, Cadena SER reports. Initially it was unclear which South American country the container came from.
Street value of 500 million euros
The value of street sales corresponds to approximately half a billion euros at prices of 60 to 80 euros per gram of cocaine. However, the estimated global annual production of the white powder is much greater.
According to information from the UN, this amounted to approximately 2,300 tons in 2021. That same year, a total of 303 tons of cocaine were seized in Europe.
