The ’16 days against violence against women’ campaign runs until December 10. Violence can take many forms, for example linguistic. The “Krone” spoke with linguist Karoline Irschara from the University of Innsbruck. About whether and where violence is hidden in language.
“Krone”:Ms. Dr. Irschara, what is your focus on the issue of violence against women?
Karoline Irschara: The first thing that comes to mind are the headlines: ‘relationship crime’ or ‘jealousy drama’, when it is actually about femicide. In the media this is obscured by euphemisms. This makes you think that maybe the woman was somehow to blame. Because thought patterns spread through linguistic images.
