That could have ended much worse: on Wednesday a car caught fire in a garage in the Weiz district. Attempts by a 75-year-old to extinguish the fire failed and the fire spread to the garage. The man’s 73-year-old partner suffered smoke inhalation. The fire brigade was able to prevent the flames from spreading to the house.
On Wednesday morning, a 75-year-old from Eastern Styria in the Baierdorf area noticed that his daughter-in-law’s car, which was parked in the garage of a two-party house, was flashing and honking. It turned out that there was a fire in the footwell of the car. The man immediately started fighting the flames with a hand-held fire extinguisher. But the fire immediately flared up again. The attempt to push the car out failed as the doors locked themselves.
Gas bottles removed from burning garage
The 75-year-old called his son, who in turn called the fire brigade. According to police, the garage was already on fire when emergency services arrived. The 75-year-old and his partner (73) had now gone back into the house to rescue various items. Smoke came from the garage into the living area through open doors. The son took his father and his partner outside and also retrieved two gas bottles from the garage.
A technical defect caused a fire
The woman was taken by the Red Cross to the Weiz LKH with smoke poisoning, where she was able to leave after outpatient treatment.
The Anger and Oberfeistritz fire brigades were deployed with 32 men and prevented the flames from spreading to the residential building. A police fire investigator determined that the suspected cause was a defect in the parked car.
