Joe Biden’s multi-billion dollar package for Ukraine and Israel failed in the Senate. All Republicans unanimously voted no. Democrats then spoke of a “serious moment” for the rest of the 21st century.
The US Senate has blocked new billions in security aid for Ukraine and Israel. The $110.5 billion package failed to get the necessary 60 votes to advance to a debate in the 100-member Senate on Wednesday. All Republicans in the Senate voted no, as did independent Senator Bernie Sanders, who usually votes with the Democrats.
Schumer: “Serious moment”
Sanders expressed concern about the financing of Israel’s “current inhumane military strategy” against the Palestinians. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer also voted “no” to allow review of the proposal for procedural reasons.
After the vote, the Democrat spoke of a “serious moment that will have lasting consequences for the 21st century” and endangers the decline of Western democracy. If Republicans don’t agree, “Putin will stroll through Ukraine and Europe.”
US President Joe Biden had earlier warned: “Make no mistake, today’s vote will be remembered for a long time. History will judge harshly… we cannot allow (Russian President Vladimir) Putin to win.”
Republicans want new border policy
Democrats argue that aid to allies is essential to bolster global democracy and push back on autocracy. Blocking the bill would send a message to U.S. adversaries and allies alike that the United States does not stand with its international partners.
With their no, Republicans want to strengthen their demands for stricter immigration policies and controls at the southern border and demand more responsibility for American taxpayers’ money flowing abroad. Schumer had previously said he would try to break the impasse with an amendment to border policy.
Republicans and Democrats in Congress have been debating for months over how to finance the billions in aid President Joe Biden has demanded for Ukraine and Israel, for U.S. interests in the Indo-Pacific and for international humanitarian aid. An agreement on a new budget was only possible after aid to Ukraine was ruled out. There is resistance, especially among Republicans, to further military aid to the government in Kiev.
