For Daniela Nobis and Mario Kaltenegger it was supposed to be a tour through Cuba with a lot of relaxation. On the penultimate day of their holiday, the two lifeguards from Salzburg on the Varadero peninsula needed heroism. “We were in the sea for a while in the morning, but we did not go far in because there was a very strong current,” Kaltenegger tells the “Krone”.
Strong winds and waves up to two meters high spoil the fun. The Cuban water rescuers raised the yellow flag. During lunch, the two Salzburg residents heard cries for help from other holidaymakers. “I immediately went into the sea, saw a female floating on the surface of the water and crawled towards her,” says the water rescuer who works in Seeham. His partner, who was active in Hallein, followed him with two quickly organized pool noodles as improvised rescue equipment.
“The current was very strong, it was really extremely strenuous,” says Kaltenegger. By joining forces they brought the injured British woman to shore. Nobis also pulled the swimmer’s panicked husband out of the water. “I didn’t think about it for long. Wherever it is in the world, it is self-evident that you help,” says Kaltenegger. “It was a matter of seconds. If a wave had hit the woman, she would have been difficult to find.”
Thanks to the rescue operation in Salzburg, the British couple were able to continue their holiday after a night in the Cuban hospital. The hero couple returned to wintry Salzburg the day after their first foreign mission in 30 years of water rescue.
