Thanks to a young animal lover, a young farmer and the animal corner “Krone”, a young, stray Cameroonian ram was saved from death. The cub was homeless and therefore was going to be shot by a hunter.
The little Cameroonian sheep came to a farm in Lavamünd three weeks ago and joined the calves. The community tried in vain to find the owner. The young ram – he had no ear tag – was not missed by anyone. Because the calves got into the stable due to the snowfall, the ram was left alone and would be shot by the hunter responsible. Fortunately, the young nurse Julia Lampel from Villach was on duty in the community in Lavamünd and heard about the animal tragedy. “I immediately offered to take over the ram. Because I had no space, I naturally asked the animal corner “Krone” for help,” reports the young home nurse.
Difficult rescue operation
A home was promptly organized at the Melcherhof in Grafenstein and the young animal lover was able to start the rescue operation. “I drove to Lavamünd in the snow with my horse trailer and my two children to catch the ram,” says Lampel. But the shy animal fled into the forest. “Of course my two children were crying and so the son of the farmer’s family offered to help me.” The horse trailer was provided with delicious hay, apples and carrots and a sheep fence was also installed to attract the shy sheep and drive them into the trailer. “We had no chance on Saturday and had to go home disappointed in the evening. But on Sunday morning, during the first Advent, the farmer’s son was able to drive the little one in the trailer. Hunger had driven the sheep to the hay,” Lampel was overjoyed.
The sheep is now recovering in a special room at the Melcherhof in Grafenstein. “We have to have him examined by a vet. The sheep is probably only five months old,” emphasizes Melcherhof manager Willemine Van Ee. “Of course I also told my company about the adventure and my boss at Curadomo immediately agreed to sponsor the Cameroonian sheep,” says Julia Lampel, who affectionately called the ram “Felix”. The young ram can now lead a dignified life at the Melcherhof. Fate meant well for the young sheep.
