While the rural population is happy with the dream start of winter, things look different in the central area. Many hiking trails have still not been cleared there and the “white splendor” is slowly turning into a gloomy, gray “void”. Wolfgang Traunmüller (54), meteorologist in Attnang-Puchheim, explains what this winter can bring.
“Kron”: The snow roller was extensively announced this weekend, but its dimensions surprised many compatriots.
Wolfgang Traunmüller: Something like this happens about every ten to fifteen years. But everything has to fit together, namely cold and precipitation, that is the recipe for large amounts of snow. In concrete terms, there was an Italian low and a northerly flow from Scandinavia that brought cold polar air into our country. But this combination is quite rare at the moment; the last time that happened was in 2009 and 2006, when we had 54 centimeters of snow in Wels, where I live.
