So far, the cold and widespread snow cover have provided the best winter feeling in the entire country. But milder air will move into the country this weekend, increasing the risk of freezing rain due to freezing rain. Next week should also start unwintering. Unfortunately, the question of a White Christmas cannot yet be seriously answered given the current state of affairs. There might be some hope in Innsbruck…
It will be almost dry throughout Austria on Saturday. Only in the lowlands can there be drizzle with an increased risk of slippery conditions. Further west and south there are sometimes larger sunny windows before the cloud umbrella of a new disturbance settles over Vorarlberg and North Tyrol in the evening. On the night of the 2nd Advent there will be more sleet and rain up to the higher low mountain ranges, especially in the west. However, temperatures of up to plus 8 degrees are still possible during the day.
2. Advent will be sunny at times
Remnants of a decreasing disturbance still pose a risk of freezing rain locally on Sunday morning, especially in the far east and southeast, as well as in some Alpine valleys. However, the mitigation also comes into effect here during the day. The sun can also be seen occasionally throughout Austria – only in isolated cases can thick fog persist. Daily maximum temperatures are around 2 to 11 degrees.
It will be milder next week
In the new week, the mild westerly flow will finally prevail across the country, and the maximum values will be accordingly unwintered. It usually reaches 5 to 11 degrees, although in some Alpine valleys or sheltered catchments it always remains slightly colder. Moreover, it rains repeatedly and the snow line retreats beyond 1500 meters. With wind, rain and mild air, the snow in the lowlands will finally be in danger; at altitudes below 700 metres, the white splendor will probably melt away in the coming week.
It will only become colder from the north in the second half of the week, but with a strong high-pressure area towards the 3rd of Advent, there will be no significant precipitation in sight…
The question of all questions
For this reason, the question of a White Christmas cannot yet be seriously answered. “Forecasts made more than two weeks in advance are like gambling,” say the meteorologists at the Austrian Severe Weather Center (UWZ).
In the capitals of the states, the chance of a white Christmas has been around 20 to 30 percent over the past thirty years. There is a little more hope for snow lovers in Innsbruck: Christmas will be more than 40 percent covered in snow here.
