The landing of a passenger plane at Tel Aviv airport amid intense rocket attacks on the greater city area has caused an uproar. Videos of the plane approaching to land can be seen online and on Israeli television (see above).
In the background you can see the Iron Dome missile defense intercepting rockets fired from the Gaza Strip. Television released the Friday evening video after a news blackout was lifted. It is unclear whether there was an acute danger to the machine.
Israel is often no longer served
After the outbreak of the Gaza war, numerous international airlines suspended their flights to Israel due to security concerns. But the Israeli airline El Al in particular continues to offer scheduled flights to and from Tel Aviv.
Twenty years ago, El Al was the first airline to begin equipping its civilian passenger aircraft with a missile defense system. The system called “Flight Guard” detects heat-seeking guided missiles using radar and can distract them with decoys (also called “flares”).
Thousands of rockets were fired at Israel in two months
Since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, thousands of rockets have been fired into Israel from the Gaza Strip. There have also been several rocket alerts at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport, for example during German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s visit to Israel in October. The Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Islamist terror organization Hamas, claimed responsibility for the attacks on Friday.
