Just over two months have passed since Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israeli civilians. The Israeli army reacts to the massacre with the utmost severity: after days of bombardments, it invades the Gaza Strip and arrests hundreds of people. A newspaper report now claims that six Palestinians died in Israeli custody under unclear circumstances.
Israel’s prison authority said on Sunday that the deaths were being investigated, but that the investigation had not yet been completed. The Haaretz newspaper had reported that four Palestinians had died in prisons in Israel and two in military custody.
Corpses with signs of violence
At least two of the bodies are said to show signs of violence. The Israel Prisons Authority reported deaths in its regular bulletins on the deaths of Palestinian prisoners on October 23 and 24 and November 13 and 18. Each time it was said that an investigation was being conducted into the circumstances of the death.
Palestinian organizations supporting prisoners confirmed the report. Other Palestinian prisoners had complained of violence against them. Similar accusations came from Palestinian prisoners released as part of a deal between Israel and the Islamist Hamas. However, these were rejected by the prison authorities.
Broken ribs and bruises in dead 33-year-old
“Haaretz” described the case of a 33-year-old man from the West Bank who died on November 13. During an autopsy, a doctor from the Israeli organization Doctors for Human Rights discovered bruises on the chest and other parts of the body, as well as broken ribs. However, the cause of death is still unclear.
Right-wing extremist Israeli Police Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has long campaigned for tightening conditions for Palestinians in Israeli prisons. He recently ordered terrorists arrested after the October 7 Hamas massacre to be housed in an underground wing of an Israeli detention center.
