After fleeing for miles through Vienna on Friday evening, the man arrested by police now denies he was the driver of the Jaguar. The 34-year-old chased the officers and caused two accidents with serious injuries. The vehicle was not registered for traffic. In addition, the Serb did not have a driver’s license and used drugs.
The man who was arrested denied everything during his interrogation. The Vienna police has now announced this. According to his own statements, he should not have driven the vehicle involved in the accident: a Jaguar. Rather, he sat in the back seat and his two cousins sat in the driver and passenger seats.
Identified by officers as the driver
However, he was clearly identified as the driver by the officers who tried to stop him for a routine check and by those who caught him after he fled on foot. The search for the other two prisoners is still ongoing.
Two people were seriously injured in accidents
The 34-year-old had evaded a routine check by officers of the Meidling city police command near the Gaudenzdorfer Belt in Meidling on Friday around 8:30 p.m. and fled through the city. He ignored the red light and hit a cyclist, crashed into an oncoming car and also drove the car onto the sidewalk. The 46-year-old cyclist was seriously injured, as was a 52-year-old passenger in the accident car. The two were on the mend and were expected to be released to home care on Sunday.
Caught by police while escaping on foot
Only the head-on collision with the oncoming vehicle on the Landstraße belt prevented the Serb’s motorized escape. He ran away, but was arrested a short time later.
License plates were stolen
The car was not “registered upright,” police spokeswoman Barbara Gass reported on Sunday. The last registered owner stated that he sold the vehicle legally. It is unclear how it ended up with the Serb. In any case, the license plates attached to the getaway car were reported stolen.
Cannabis herb found in Jaguar
The 34-year-old did not have a valid driver’s license and after the dangerous chase through several streets with busy main routes, a doctor also determined that he was suffering from addictive substances. A small amount of cannabis herb was found in the car.
