Equipped with freeride skis and avalanche equipment, a Czech (41) ventured alone into the free ski area in Sölden (Tyrol) on Sunday. This caused a 15-meter-wide slab of snow on a steep slope to loosen and bury the man.
A 41-year-old Czech made a variant descent alone in the Sölden ski area on Sunday. He was traveling with his freeride skis and the proper avalanche emergency equipment.
Driving on steep terrain
At around 1:30 p.m., the man left the organized ski area of the Sölden ski area on the black marked slope No. 14 and orthographically speaking went to the free ski area to the right of the black slope No. 14.
Swept away by masses of snow
At the so-called “wayside shrine” an avalanche of about 15 meters wide and 45 meters long occurred on the 35-40 degree steep southeastern slope. The Czech was dragged through the snow masses for about 20 meters until he finally came to a stop under a rock ledge.
The 41-year-old was unharmed by the avalanche and was partially buried up to his waist. He was able to free himself and leave the avalanche cone alone.
