For years he swallowed the humiliation of his wife, says Daniel S. (46) in the murder case in Wels. On January 8, he took up arms and shot his wife Simone in front of his stepson. He cannot remember the exact course of events. The jury quickly and unanimously ruled: 20 years in prison for murder, not final.
“I plead guilty, Your Honor.” With a certain sense of drama, Daniel S. appeared before the jury in Wels on Thursday. The former forest ranger is said to have killed his wife Simone, who was sitting at the kitchen table, on January 8 with a shot to the head from his Glock 17. For the stepson, who was sitting at the table just a meter away from his mother, a can of goulash to eat. Then he called the police. His act was the first femicide of 2022.
The 46-year-old, who was born in Germany, cannot explain the “why” to the judge either. “I fell into an emotional hole, into a downward spiral.”
“pure murder”
For prosecutor Günther Diplinger it is a “flawless murder” for which “is a lifetime in the room”. Lawyer Michael Lanzinger brought up manslaughter at the start of the trial with a maximum sentence of ten years.
The couple wanted to flee to Sweden due to corona measures
When describing the day of the crime, the suspect emphasized that he did not want to say anything bad about his wife. To then detail how the mother of five had humiliated and pressured him for years. “I couldn’t do anything right for her.” There was agreement on rejecting the corona measures. Therefore, despite all the differences, they wanted to emigrate to Sweden.
On the other hand, he spent only a few minutes describing the crime, said that after another argument, he drank schnapps and beer in the basement, then lay down on the couch with the gun. Before the police, his stepson suspected that Daniel S. had only pretended to be asleep, but was actually lurking. The defendant, who wore a black tie as a symbol of mourning at the trial, explained that he had long thought about murder and suicide.
“Hidden Narcissist”
Psychiatrist Adelheid Kastner describes him as a “hidden narcissist”. She could not diagnose a personality disorder. The jury deliberations began in the late afternoon, lasted barely two hours, and were unanimous in favor of the indictment. Neither the defense nor the Public Prosecution Service has issued a statement, so it is not final yet.
