Music Theater Linz – Musical “Tootsie”: Becoming a better man as a woman

The gender-swapping comedy “Tootsie” – an Austrian premiere – has opened at the Linz Music Theater. People were extremely curious whether the 1982 cult film with Dustin Hoffman could still work as a musical today. But director Ulrich Wiggers pulls off the coup, relies on fast choreography and does not ignore the gender debate.

Actor Michael doesn’t get any engagement, even though he does what he can. His direct nature is probably responsible for making every audition scene a disaster. But then he resorts to a trick: he puts on a dress, auditions as Dorothy for a female role in the musical ‘Romeo and Juliet’ – and gets the job. He quickly becomes indispensable as Dorothy. Everything goes well – until he falls in love with his colleague Julie…
