How climate change is driving us to drink and use drugs

Date:

“If we continue like this, you will only have two decisions left: alcohol or psychotropic drugs,” Chancellor Karl Nehammer warned in view of the enormous inflation in the summer of 2022. However, the warning words are probably also relevant in connection with the climate change. Researchers have now outlined five scenarios of how this could make us increasingly dependent on alcohol and other drugs.

Scientists agree: climate change will impact every aspect of our health and well-being. However, the potential damage goes beyond the body’s ability to handle extreme heat or cold.

Droughts, storms, wildfires and floods are likely to take an increasing toll on the psyche as they occur, causing people to turn to alcohol, nicotine, over-the-counter and prescription drugs or other psychoactive substances.
