Shipyard visited – Putin: Russia will build more nuclear submarines

Russian President Vladimir Putin traveled to the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk, northern Russia, on Monday to attend the commissioning of two new nuclear submarines. He announced the construction of eight more strategic missile carriers.

According to Putin, the submarines will “Emperor Alexander III.” and “Krasnoyarsk” will soon be integrated into the Russian Pacific Fleet in the Far East. In his speech, the Kremlin chief also promised to put into practice plans to modernize Russia’s navy.

Russia is building more nuclear submarines
In the coming years, the Sevmash Naval Shipyard in Severodvinsk will build three more strategically armed nuclear submarines of the Borei-A class, Putin announced. The “Imperator Alexander III”, the seventh example of this class, also belongs to this type of ship. The 140-meter submarines can fire SS-N-32 Bulawa intercontinental ballistic missiles.

The 130 meter long “Krasnoyarsk” is a smaller type of submarine. According to Russian information, the country is armed with Onik anti-ship missiles and Kalibr cruise missiles. The Sevmash shipyard is located near Arkhangelsk on the White Sea, about 1,000 kilometers north of the Russian capital Moscow.

The second largest submarine fleet in the world
According to the Global Firepower portal, Russia operates the world’s second largest submarine fleet after China, with around 70 submarines.

The Russian president only announced on Friday that he will again participate in the March 2024 presidential elections.
