Also in the summer semester, Ukrainian students are not allowed to pay tuition fees at universities and teacher training colleges. This provides for an amendment to the tuition fees scheme of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, which is expected to be tested on Wednesday. The same goes for Iranians.
Ukrainian students do not have to pay tuition fees since the summer semester of 2022 due to the consequences of the Russian war of aggression. Because some Iranian students in Austria can no longer support their families due to the current nationwide protests in Iran, they too will be exempted from the obligation to pay tuition fees in the summer semester 2023. A decision will then be taken on a possible extension of the arrangement for Iranian students.
The ministry assumes a total of 3380 people affected. The universities will receive compensation for the loss of 2.45 million euros.
“As in the school sector, we will continue our support measures at the universities and waive tuition fees for Ukrainian students for the summer semester 2023,” said department head Martin Polaschek (ÖVP). “Due to the dramatic exceptional situation in Iran,” this measure is now being extended to Iranian students.
