Six suspects, all men from neighboring Colombia, have been arrested. President Guillermo Lasso has declared a state of emergency for 60 days. A militant group called Los Lobos has claimed responsibility for the attack. In a published video, they not only talked about the murder, but also announced further actions against “corrupt politicians”. Interestingly, however, both Villavicencio and the current candidate, Christian Zurita, had worked on reports of corruption in ex-President Rafael Correa’s government.
