The party of the murdered Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio has now found a replacement for the man who was shot. This is another investigative reporter. He would also have been friends with the dead man.
First, the party Construye (Baue) announced on Saturday that the party leadership had chosen Villavicencio’s vice-candidate Andrea Gonzalez Nader. However, it remained unclear whether the electoral authority CNE would approve, as the environmental activist was already listed as a candidate for the office of Vice President – and will now remain so. “In the absence of clear answers from the CNE and in view of the angry reaction from some political circles, we will not take any chances,” the centre-left party said.
Villavicencio was shot dead on Wednesday after a campaign rally in Quito. At least nine people were injured and one suspect died after a shootout with security forces. Six suspects, all men from neighboring Colombia, have been arrested. President Guillermo Lasso has declared a state of emergency for 60 days. Zurita and Gónzalez Náder wore body armor during Sunday’s press conference.
Killed and new candidate wrote about corruption
A militant group called Los Lobos has claimed responsibility for the attack. In a published video, they not only talked about the murder, but also announced further actions against “corrupt politicians”. Interestingly, however, both Villavicencio and the current candidate, Christian Zurita, had worked on reports of corruption in ex-President Rafael Correa’s government.
